Capturing the experience
The Summer School of Cinema and Cretan Culture 2022 of the Chania Film Festival took place July 1 – 10, 2022 at MAICH Chania hosting the summer youth camp of the Goethe-Institut Athen under the special title 3,2,1 ACTION! SMALL AND SMALL FILMMAKERS IN ACTION!
The students participating in the camp lived a 10-day program full of experiences, got to know the documentary and the culture of Crete. They entered the role of the filmmaker, learning the secrets of the camera and editing, they know the process of creating a documentary.
At the same time, they participated in thematic workshops, shared ideas, letting their imagination and creativity travel. They met and collaborated creatively with about 30 young men and women from all over the country.
As part of the program we explored the environment, discussed climate change, alternative tourism, agritourism, Cretan diet, traditional professions and social life in Crete, and created audio-visual products and 4 short films related to these topics.
Of course we met people who are active in the program's themes by recording their experiences.
Finally, the students had the opportunity to work in groups on thematic projects, approaching social issues through interactive and interdisciplinary workshops, while learning the German language and enjoying a very fun experience.
Welcome and installation of the team - Getting to know each other
The experience began with the reception of the participants, their installation in the hostels and their acquaintance with the premises of MAICH. The first concern is getting to know the team members. We started with musical theater dating games…
Morning Training Program
The daily program of the summer school was designed with 3-hour experiential workshops from 9 am to 2 pm.
In this context, the group attended laboratory courses on the following topics:
Film Literacy, Introduction to Documentary, Learning Filmmaking Media, Creating my Documentary, Oral History, Photo Stories, Cinema and Creative Writing, Music and Cinema, Cretan Culture and Tradition, Cretan Diet, German Language Approaches.
Afternoon – Evening Program
The daily program of the Summer School had afternoon training, entertainment and fun activities. The goal is a richly lived experience that would be captured with both knowledge and entertainment. In this context, the group followed the actions:
Living the Summer Cinema experience, Getting to know the Film Club program at the School of the Chania Film Festival, Traveling to the world of the Stars - Stargazing, Meeting an Actor, With the Music of the House...
Educational Visits and Parallel Activities
As part of the program, visits to Chania were planned so that the team could get to know the city and its particular elements as well as places related to the theme of the documentaries it was creating. At the same time, related actions were planned. Specifically, the participants in the summer school...
They got to know the Botanical Park and the Gardens of Crete
It was a day trip and according to everyone's statement a unique experience as the participants got to know the flora of the Mediterranean as it has grown in the areas of the Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete. At the same time, it was also the subject of one of the documentaries of the summer school.
They got to know the Old Town of Chania
One of the goals of the summer school is to get to know Chania. In this context, a visit was made to the old town of Chania accompanied by a tour guide, offering a complete presentation of the history of the Venetian port of Chania.
They also met The Great Arsenal and KAM. The Great Arsenal which houses the Mediterranean Architecture Center is an emblematic building with an important history in the heart of the Venetian Port of Chania. We were welcomed by the Deputy Mayor of Culture of the Municipality of Chania.
They had a complete experience of Cretan Food - Cretan Cuisine
The Cretan Diet was one of the sections discussed thematically at the summer school and was the subject of one of the documentaries created by the children. In this context, they attended an experiential Cretan Diet workshop, creating some foods which they later tasted.

Our evenings included Cinema Under the Stars with popcorn and Biral (local soft drink)
Sports, Music, Dance and Song!
When the condition is creative and the atmosphere corresponding... Sports, Music, Dance and Song are part of the creative meetings...
Closing ceremony
The closing ceremony was the highlight of the Cinema Summer Camp of the Chania Film Festival. In the presence of representatives from the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Platanias, the Goethe Institut of Athens and the Goethe Zentrum Chania, the administration of MAICH, parents and a large crowd, the summer school concluded with the presentation of 4 documentaries created by the working groups. Music and dancing closed the evening.

The cooperation of the trainers of the Chania Film Festival and the collaborators – trainers of the Goethe-Institut Athen was exemplary, so that there is a permanent approach to the German language of both the thematic research and the audio-visual workshops.
Making a Documentary with my Team
In this section, the participants divided into 4 groups worked on their Documentary. They decided on the topic and scripted their Documentary. They researched their topic. They interviewed experts on their subjects
They transcribed and edited their material. They were taught Editing and Edited their Documentaries. They worked on translating and subtitling their films into German.
